At the outbreak of World War II, German forces were recognised as the best equipped and most efficient in the world. The early successes of the Blitzkrieg campaign, however, disguised some fundamental deficiencies, especially in the Luftwaffe. Throughout the conflict, the Third Reich lacked an effective bomber and by the time this flaw was addressed, it was too late. The price Germany and Hitler would pay for not investing in four-engine long range bombers would be enormous, and a major contributing factor in the outcome of World War II.

Joseph Goebbels honed the art of mass communication until, in the early days at least, it became one of Germany's most effective weapons.
This DVD features rare examples of propaganda posters and campaigns, and insight from Chris Read and Robin Lenman both of Warwick University into the huge part propaganda had to play within World War Two.

When Hitler ordered the invasion of the Soviet Union, his forces were divided into three separate theaters or groups, each responsible for different objectives. Each operated semi-independently and faced unique within the vast territory of the Russian interior. Primarily based on German combat footage, each episode is a broad portrait of the objectives, campaigns, and eventual fates of these separate commands during the largest and most destructive land campaign ever launched. The objective of Army Group South was to capture the oil fields surrounding the Caucasus Mountains. This oil was critical to the future of the Nazi war effort. Their indecision about whether the primary goal of the campaign should be Moscow or these oil fields effectively hamstrung the German Campaign and led to the eventual Soviet victory. Also covered is the disastrous battle of Stalingrad, perhaps the most vicious of any battle during the war.

It was not until 1941 that the British Army General Staff ordered a heavy cruiser tank to replace the vulnerable Crusader. With a design based around the powerful Rolls Royce Meteor, a detuned aircraft engine, the Cromwell went through many design modifications before it finally saw action at Normandy in 1944 - 15 months after it was deemed ready for battle. It was however a fast and agile tank; several thousand had been built by the end of the war in 1945.

After the horrors of the Great War, an uneasy peace prevailed. Britannia ruled the waves - but for how long? The mid 1930's saw Germany rebuilding her fleets, defying the Versailles Treaty as Hitler planned to encircle Britain with his Kriegsmarine. Within hours of war's declaration, a U-boat had claimed its first victim in an underwater reign of terror that struck merchantmen and warship alike. By April 1940, Germany had sunk one million tons Of Allied shipping. The entrance of Mussolini's Italy shifted the balance of power in the Mediterranean. However the course of Naval warfarewas changed in 1941 when torpedo bombers from HMS illustrious decimated the Italian fleet at anchor in Taranto, crippling three of their battleships in the first Allied victory since the fall Of France.

The concept of a long range, fast, heavy fighter or 'zerstorer' (destroyer), lay close to the heart of Hermann Goering during the early years of the growth of the new German air force. The chosen design came out of the Messerschmitt stable, the first prototype of the Bf-110 taking to the air in 1936. Although fast, the size of the Bf-110 left it unable to dog-fight with the more nimble RAF fighters, and was revamped for further employment as a night-fighter, serving alongside other types, especially the Junkers Ju-88, the Luftwaffe's premier type in the nocturnal battles with RAF Bomber Command. Using combat footage from all fronts and from film shot in the skies by night and day over Germany, this programme provides a dramatic account of the contribution made by the heavy fighters of the Luftwaffe in World War Two.
