Europe's Secret Armies - The Polish Resistance

This is a series of programmes outlining the different resistance groups which developed to resist Hitler's German occupation of the countries of Europe.Unlike many of the other European countries that suffered invasion during World War Two, Poland had the unenviable task of fighting foes on two fronts; the Germans from the West and the Russians from the East. As a direct result, the Polish resistance fashioned itself into one of the most professional and successful underground forces in Europe. From S.O.E. trained "Cichociemni" to the Jewish population in the Warsaw ghettos, the spirit of the Polish people proved indestructible beneath the Nazi jackboot.

In a regime where distributing anti-Nazi leaflets carried the same punishment as being found with a gun, the men and woman of Holland showed extraordinary bravery as they sought to regain their independence. Featuring interviews with surviving resistance fighters, this programme explores the stories of individuals and a nation that refused to succumb to fear.

Europe's Secret Armies - The Mountain Men Of Crete

Its geographical importance in both German and Allied planning for the domination of the Mediterranean and Africa was to prove Crete's downfall.

 Prologue To War

Starting at the end of WWI, the effects of political unrest and economic depression give rise to extremists who take over the governments in Germany, Italy and Japan.
These Axis powers use nationalism and prejudice to rally their populace and push for expansion.
Meanwhile, American is content to stay out of the conflicts and their entry into WWII is only assured after the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

World War II - 1939-1941

This account of the early years of WWII covers the early successes of the Axis powers as they dominate every for they face.
It started in 1939 when Germany signed a non-aggression pact with Russia, take over Poland, and then quickly invade and take over Belgium, Holland and France.

At 7.30am on 1 July 1916, British soldiers mounted an attack on German army positions in northern France: the biggest battle mounted by Britain since Waterloo.

"The Big Push" was meant to break the stalemate of trench warfare on the Western Front, offer relief to the French at Verdun, and get the war moving again. However, the attack plan, a compromise reached by British commander-in-chief Douglas Haig and his army commander Henry Rawlinson, was fatally flawed. As 60,000 British soldiers went "over the top" they were met by a devastating barrage of German machine guns and artillery that should by then have been destroyed by the preliminary British barrage. By the end of the day over 19,240 men were dead, with another 35,493 wounded. A byword for the futility of war, the Somme marked the end of chivalrous notions of combat, and loudly heralded the mechanised slaughter of modern warfare.
